ENERGY WEST | Community Visioning & Community Energy Action

Energy West brings community, policy, and innovation together in the West of Ireland, amplifying local voices and shaping bold, science‑led action for clean energy.

Monthly Meetup Recap

Insight, collaboration, action every six weeks at PorterShed.

Energy transition moves faster when communities shape it.

That was the focus of last month’s Energy West Ireland Meetup on Community Visioning and Energy Action, where policy, practice and research came together to explore what real community energy action looks like.

Dara Ó Maoildhia, set the tone with perspective from the Aran Islands Energy Co-Op. The transition is not a burden. It is an opportunity. Warmer homes. Lower bills. New local jobs. A stronger island economy. Avril Ní Shearcaigh built on that momentum, highlighting that the goal is simple. Keep progress moving while long-term infrastructure takes shape.

Evan Boyle stepped back to share lessons from the Dingle Peninsula 2030 initiative. The starting point was not energy technology. It was a shared ambition for sustainable employment and keeping young people in the region. From that goal, partnerships formed across community groups, researchers and industry. Alexandra Revez closed by unpacking the tools that make community visioning effective. Deliberative processes. Empathy mapping. Community mapping. Structured dialogue that moves beyond technical fixes and into shared ownership.

One theme carried through every contribution. Climate action and community development are not separate tracks. When communities lead, energy transition becomes a driver for stronger local economies, deeper collaboration and long-term resilience.

Thanks to everyone who joined the session and contributed to the discussion.
