A couple of weeks ago, I attended the Siorghlas Investment Summit. The attention to detail from the Western Development Commission could be seen in everything from the selection of speakers to the venue. The event was held at Dexcom Stadium, with an overarching view of the West of Ireland through the windows, demonstrating the potential it has to offer. The conversations taking place had me on the edge of my seat because of the genuine excitement in the room. Ireland is a country that is growing, and everyone at the summit wants to see it reach its fullest potential.

Siorghlas made sure to stress the importance of family business and staying true to one’s mission. I specifically remember the speech given by the co-founder of Good4U, Michelle Blurr. It is a family-run health food company focused on keeping things transparent and simple for the customer. Michelle mentioned that, in the process of growing, they had to turn down some big offers because they wanted to stay true to their peanut-free brand. They were not willing to give that up. That action alone speaks volumes to me because of the belief they have in themselves. Good4U is a family-run business, which is something special because there is an innate trust in each other that is reflected in their community loyalty.

I also had the opportunity to meet Gillian Buckley, Head of Investment at the Western Development Commission. I have seen Gillian come into meetings at the PorterShed and would have never known the significant impact she is making in the community. The way she carries herself and engages with everyone is truly inspiring. Gillian took part in a panel at the Siorghlas Summit, offering her years of experience and advice. She spoke about the necessary tools for fundraising and what it takes to keep going, emphasizing the importance of not selling yourself short and confidently asking for funding when you believe in what you are doing.

The Summit was booming with questions on how to strengthen and use the Irish network. The importance of knowing what your company/startup is trying to solve will have investors take you more seriously. Speakers such as John Power explained taking it step by step and starting first with solving a meaningful problem. The West of Ireland is unique because it has its own identity, the WDC and has continuously shown its support in the community. There is a bright future in business, community, and creative industry leading to an evergreen of growth!
